Tatjana Rebelle NUVO interview
In 1990, a small bunch of free-thinkers came to the conclusion that Indianapolis needed an independent voice — a voice designed, as one early editor put it, “to make trouble.” That concept matured into a mission statement that directs us “to empower intelligent, open-minded innovators through storytelling…NUVO is created by and for people who love our community, our culture and our environment.”
We cover everything Central Indiana cares about, from arts to food to music to social justice and environmental concerns, all in our own unique, irreverent and passionate manner.

Unearthed—Tatjana Rebelle
Unearthed is a multiyear thematic initiative from Indiana Humanities that encourages Hoosiers to discover and discuss their relationships with the natural world. Through engaging speakers, a statewide read, a tour of the Smithsonian’s Water/Ways exhibit, Campfire treks, a film series, podcast and more, Hoosiers will explore how we shape the environment and how the environment shapes us.

"Through Our Eyes"
You are so much more than your past
You are full of stories untold
Stories that can meld into your promising future
From the barber shops to the front porches
From the coffeeshops to the dinner tables
But you must listen and witness the greatness that you can be and already are

"Come/Back" written & performed by Tatjana Rebelle
“Come/Back” was commissioned by the Indianapolis Arts Council fundraiser Start with Art. This piece is a reminder that “no matter where you are on your journey, take the time you need to remember where you come from, who you are and dream for tomorrow but just remember to come back. “

Bookmark Indy: "Magnificent Who"
Beneath every building is a history carved out from stories untold.
Every bend of the road there is a remnant of land that still clings to it’s tribal name.
Magnificence becomes unbound to fortunes, carried into the wind and too lost amongst the new stories told in languages yet to be discovered.

When silence is no longer an option | TEDxIndianaUniversity
In this speech, Tatjana Rebelle discusses how their personal experiences with bigotry have inspired their continued commitment to change and activism, often through art and other creative mediums. Tatjana has spent decades doing the work to highlight the stories often overlooked, creating spaces for change and comfort. Tatjana Rebelle (they/she) is a mother, activist, organizer, writer, performer and promoter. They have lived in Indianapolis most of their life, which is where they learned to use their writing to deal with growing up in the midwest as a non-binary, first generation Afro-German and Queer. They founded VOCAB Indy, a monthly cultural arts event centering QTBIPOC communities in 1997 and stepped away from curating the event in 2020, to pursue writing and traveling. They have been fighting for social justice for communities of color and QTBIPOC rights for several years. They are currently the Resilient Schools Coordinator with Earth Charter Indiana, leading the Indy Thriving Schools program, which is a certification and grants program for schools tackling sustainability and climate change. Their work gives them the chance to follow their idol, Bayard Rustin’s, footsteps in speaking truth to power and taking a stance against global and local oppression. Their goal is to bring art and activism to the people that need to hear it the most, with every action they take. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Tatjana Rebelle: on Tradition.
“But there is another tradition that has been passed to me, whether I like it or not, a tradition that lives in my bones, that informs my art, my work, my every decision. A tradition passed from my ancestors, from the giants who walked before me. A tradition that demands I see, name and actively resist injustice in all of its forms. “
